A Public Discussion on Self-organized Libraries | Sunday, 17 December 2017, 1.30-4 pm, at Jogja Library Center | In many countries the role of public libraries is changing. In the Netherlands many neighborhood libraries were recently closed due to budget cuts by a neo-liberal government – in Indonesia there has never been a substantial public library system. Self-organized libraries have filled some of these gaps. In what significant political moment(s) did they arise? What impact do libraries have on local communities? Can a library function as a public safe space that is open to different voices? Which tactics are deployed by self-organized libraries to encourage uncensored and unrestricted access to information?

Socially-Engaged Art & Design in Public Spaces from a Polish Perspective

Since 2014 curator Marianna Dobkowska work together with researcher Kris Lukomski on the artist exchange between Indonesia and Poland and explore art communities and socially-engaged initiatives in Indonesia. The conversation at KUNCI is a mirror-reflection of the specified issues from the Polish perspective and an introduction to the socially-engaged projects and communities from Poland. It will eventually be the preview of the exhibition & public program that are planned in Jakarta in June and July 2016, that will present the variety of art-initiatives, art and design works selected by curators to shape the image of contemporary Poland and its social backgrounds.
